Background of the Study
Knowledge is a critical asset for organizations, particularly in complex and knowledge-intensive industries like oil and gas. Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) enable organizations to capture, store, share, and apply organizational knowledge to improve decision-making processes (Davenport & Prusak, 2024). The oil and gas industry in Nigeria faces challenges such as operational inefficiencies, regulatory compliance issues, and volatile market conditions, which necessitate informed and data-driven decisions.
In Jigawa State, oil and gas firms operate in a dynamic environment that requires constant innovation and adaptability. Effective use of KMS can support strategic, tactical, and operational decisions by facilitating the integration of expertise and information across the organization. Despite the potential benefits, many firms struggle with adopting KMS due to technical, cultural, and organizational barriers.
This study examines the role of KMS in enhancing corporate decision-making processes within oil and gas firms in Jigawa State, with a focus on their application, benefits, and challenges.
Statement of the Problem
The absence of effective knowledge-sharing mechanisms often results in poor decision-making, inefficiencies, and missed opportunities in the oil and gas industry. In Jigawa State, the adoption of KMS by oil and gas firms is limited by factors such as inadequate infrastructure, resistance to change, and a lack of skilled personnel.
The lack of empirical studies on the role of KMS in corporate decision-making in this sector further exacerbates the problem, leaving organizations with limited guidance on optimizing their knowledge resources for better decisions. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of Knowledge Management Systems in corporate decision-making in oil and gas firms in Jigawa State.
2. To identify challenges faced by oil and gas firms in adopting KMS.
3. To evaluate the impact of KMS on operational and strategic decision-making.
Research Questions
1. How do Knowledge Management Systems influence corporate decision-making in oil and gas firms in Jigawa State?
2. What challenges do oil and gas firms face in adopting KMS?
3. What is the impact of KMS on operational and strategic decision-making?
Research Hypotheses
1. Knowledge Management Systems do not significantly influence corporate decision-making in oil and gas firms in Jigawa State.
2. Challenges in adopting KMS do not significantly affect their implementation.
3. KMS adoption does not significantly impact operational and strategic decision-making.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on oil and gas firms in Jigawa State, examining their use of KMS for decision-making. Limitations may include limited access to sensitive organizational data and varying levels of KMS adoption across firms.
